One Smart Cookie

I was out at class list night so Mike took the kids to the deli for supper. The Girl seems to have recovered and really wanted PBJ. Unfortunately she is the slowest eater on the planet.

Once the boys were done and Mike had waited for an appropriate amount of time he tried to hurry The Girl up:

Mike: "Hurry Up, we are all waitign for you to finish."
The Girl: "Ok. Hey, do you wnat my crust?"
The Boy: "Sure."
munch, munch.
The Girl: "Now we are waiting for him to finish."

She scares me.

The Girl is Sick

Sunday night it started with a sore throat and a headache. But I don’t always believe them so I said we will see how she feels in the morning. Never made it. 1:30 AM she came running into the bedroom and she was on fire. Poured some meds down her throat but she was still semi awake the rest of the night moaning.

We went off to the doctors – strep. Not a big surprise. The rest of the day she stayed in our bed and dozed off and on. She did go back to her room for the night and was back down at 5am – at least I got some sleep.

Mike stayed with her on Tues and I headed to work. By lunch time she was able to eat a slice of toast. When I got home she decided she felt good enough for a bath. I filled up our tub and found some bubble bath for her. Once we turned on the jet the bubbles really started – and then they sort of exploded. She loved it. Had to go into the shower to rinse off – she looked like a poodle! I’m glad we have The Girl back. We missed her.

The Tooth Fairy

Last night I had Tae Kwon Do. While we were practicing our self defense we somehow got on the subject of teeth. When I got home, The Girl greeted me at the back door – “Can The Boy pull out my loose tooth?” Sure, as long as I don’t have to see it.

Before I finished making a sandwich, they were back to show me the extracted tooth. Ugh. Then came the debate about how much she was going to get from the Tooth Fairy.

The Bo piped up with – “I didn’t get anything for my last tooth.” Crap - forgot that he pulled one out last week! I told him that the Tooth Fairy couldn’t find it and he needed to clean his room. He’s 12! I don’t think he believes – he just wants the money, but the little bugger is up later than I am – how am I supposed to play fairy! I told him that the Tooth Fairy is old and tired and we have to book appointments with her and I forgot.

The Girl has decided that there is no Tooth Fairy in Canada. She lost one on her last visit with her father and heard him downstairs grumbling about having to find money for her! No, I said, the Tooth Fairy was just afraid of being mugged by him.

Once the visit of the Tooth Fairy was confirmed, I mentioned the coincidence of us disgusting teeth at class and I had told them The Boy’s tooth stories.

The kids love stories of their adventures when they were younger so I had to retell them:

It started with my mom showing the grandkids her false teeth to scare them. Worked for 10 years on all the granddaughters – but then The Boy came on to the scene. We were on our annual summer trip to the summer home and I woke up to screaming. My mom had woken up to find The Boy standing next to her – he had swiped here teeth off the night table and were trying to put them in his own mouth!

When I though he was old enough – I read him a book about the Tooth Fairy to help him understand that his teeth were coming out, new ones would grown in and he would get money. He took it well. Until I went to tuck him in for the night – he was in the bathroom on the counter, looking in the mirror and trying to pull all his teeth out – he wanted the money.

Soon after that I was driving him home and he piped up I the backseat:

The Boy, “When we visit Nanny this summer I am going to steal her teeth.”

The Mom, “Why?”
The Boy, “I am going to put them under my pillow – I should get 100 bucks for all those teeth. I am going to buy Lego.”

Don’t worry – the phone didn’t get wet

Tuesday we had some nice warm weather. The Girl asked if she could go play with her friends before dinner. We told her sure – be back for 5:50 and take your phone with you.

5:50 came and went so Mike called to remind her to come home. The Girl answered with “Don’t worry, the phone didn’t get wet”.

Mike, “What do you mean?”

The Girl, “I fell in the lake, I’m really muddy, but I didn’t let the phone get wet.”

Mike, “I think you should come home, now”.

I met The Girl in the garage, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had imagined. Her white tennis shoes were no longer muddy and 3-4 inches of her leggings were wet. She striped them off and went inside.

The Girl, “Am I in trouble?”

The Mom, “How did you fall in the lake?”

The Girl, “The three of us were walking hand-in-hand and something happened and we all fell in. Am I in trouble?”

The Mom, “No, I did the same thing at your age.”

We all had a good laugh.

The next morning, it was raining so Mike got wet when he went out to get his paper.

Mike, “Oh no, I went to get my paper and I fell in the lake!”

The Girl, “You’re not that funny.”

Family Bed

When we were still in Canada, the master bedroom was upstairs with the kids’ rooms. They had to pass our room to go downstairs and would always pop in for a few minutes or longer in the morning.

With the Texas house, the master is downstairs at the back of the house. The Girl come down a few times after we first moved, but not too often. Since she is allowed to camp out in her playroom in front of the TV, we never see her on weekends. The Boy is way too mature for any such thing.

We had a date night on Friday and had some time to kill before our dinner reservations. I crawled into bed for 30 min so I would be bale to stay awake during the movie. Mike came and joined me. Before we knew it The Boy came looking for us – had to tell us something about Family Guy. He crawled in and goofed around. Then The Girl showed up. It was nice.

On Saturday morning, out of the blue, The Boy showed up at 7AM. Turns out he had set his alarm so he could get up and play video games and popped in to see us since he discovered the night before that our bed was so comfortable. The Girl must have known – soon she was there too. The new tradition was repeated again on Sunday.

While I have been enjoying their new found independence, it’s nice that they are still kids. I know the days are numbered.

Dreams of a 9 year old Girl

The Girl had an interesting dream last night. She dreamt that The Boy and she were orphans living on their own. Then Mike came to be their Dad, but he was a mean Dad. They decided to fix the mean Dad by sending him to Daddy school. They put a chocolate bar on the coffee table and super glue on the couch so when Mike sat down to eat the chocolate bar; he got himself glued to the couch. While he was glued to the couch, the dog came by and ate the bar. In order to get off the couch Mike had to agree to go to Daddy School.

Mike “Will there be chocolate bars at Daddy School”
The Girl “Yes”
Mike “OK I’ll go”

Dream over.

This is funny on so many levels. The kids absolutely adore Mike, they have him completely wrapped. They love joking around with him and they are always playing silly games. He does have a bit of a sweet tooth though. . The Girl has lost a few quite a few things off the coffee table to our dog Jessie. We also joke about the dog following people around waiting for them to trip so she can get their food

The sad part is The Girl just had a huge fight with her father over March Break and I can guess that the dream had a lot to do with that as well.

Wrestling Match 7 Feb 08

The Boy has been resisting wearing his wresting singlet – he said they look to revealing. But last night was photo night so he had to wear it - I asked him how he felt – “Exposed’.
Poor boy.

We were horsing around later and I hid behind a door- he sorta knew I was there and he wouldn’t come out of the kitchen. He made Mike check for him, big mistake. Mike assured him I wasn’t there and The Boy stepped out. I jumped out and he screamed. We started wrestling and I tried a couple of Tae Kwon Do moves on him. He laughed “I have the same training, Mom!” I decided to trip him. Didn’t work. He retaliated and down I went.

I banged my head good on a wooded table and I knocked over the one floor plant that didn’t die while we were away last week. Of course it fell to the carpet side, not the tile side. Dirt everywhere. The Girl came running downstairs, I assured her I was fine. Mike came and I tried to stand in front of the dirt and told him I was fine.

Mike: “What about the plant?”

Me: “What plant?”

The Boy “Mom, there is dirt all over your shirt.”

I looked down and my t-shirt was covered with potting soil. Loser. We all had a good laugh and the clean up wasn’t too bad. I didn’t even end up having a headache.

This morning as I was washing my hair I discovered that I have a bit of a tender spot at the back of my head. It’s a sad day when I can’t beat up my 12 year old anymore.

Ups and Downs on a Wednesday Night 6 Feb 08

I love Wednesday nights. They are my favorite non-weekend night:

- I do not have to be anywhere – no gymnastics, dancing, wrestling or Tae Kwon Do. I can stop and pick things up on the way home from work or gas the car.
- Once I get home I can put on the comfy house clothes and relax with a cup of tea.
- We can plan a nice meal and all of us can enjoy it (well, the adults do – the kids choke it down) and sit around and talk.
- I get to help The Girl with her homework and we can take our time so I am not freaking out and stressing her out so that she isn’t going to learn anything.

Last night was good – but not great. I was so tired – all the catch up form the vacation. We made it through the homework ok, but I slipped a few times. Nothing too bad.

We got everything done in time to allow us extra cuddle time when I tucked her in – I try to go it as often as I can since The Boy is too old and I miss him.

While we were cuddling I told her that even though we only did homework I still had a great time hanging out with her.

She agreed, “Even though we had our ups and downs, I still had a good time tonight”. She is the funniest 9 year old I have even meet.

TGIF?

OMG.
This day is going to last forever!

I am completely bored and I have a slight headache.

I am tired of sudoku puzzles hidden in the back of my log book. I have a mini window open when I can read one line of test at a time of websites, but I have been through them all and have no where else to surf.

I am completely de-motivated to do any actual work.

The DND guy next to me is a complete health freak, but today decided to eat bacon and eggs from the cafeteria at his desk. CRAP! Did I wake up in hell? I couldn’t stand it so I went to the cafeteria to get a breakfast burrito, but for the first time ever, they had none! I ended up with fruit. I did wake up in hell.

Thank God I have a long weekend and then only 4 more days until we take off.

I am not entirely sure I am going to make it.

Wrestling

After much complaining and whining The Boy finally agreed to try a match last night.

He still refused to wear the wrestling singlet – too revealing!

The guy he was supposed to go against didn’t show up so he ended up going against a guy in the next higher division – he was 15!

The Boy took him down in the first round and scored the first points.

In the second round The Boy held his own but started to lose some points due to illegal holds. He lasted all three-one minute rounds but lost with a final score of 7-4. But, 5 of the points for the other guy were penalty points against The Boy's teammates who was his correct division, so older and bigger than The Boy. He pinned The Boy’s , so technically The Boy out wrestled him.

Later the same guy fought against one of The teammate in 45 sec of the first round. Made us feel good – when we explained it to The Boy he was thrilled. So even though he lost, it turned out to be a good experience.

The New Diet – No money for lunch.

How is your day going? Mine is depressingly slow. I went to get a breakfast burrito at the cafeteria – but my wallet was missing form my purse. I panicked – thought it had fell out at home. I freaked because I planned on buying a salad for lunch today – it would have meant I had no food at all. I would rather starve than ask any of these idiots for a loan. Thought about getting you to come and take me to lunch, but the truck would probably idea at the restaurant – maybe we could do a drive-thru?

I remembered that I had asked The Girl to grab my card from my purse so I figured it was in the back seat of the car. I went out – and nope, not there. Figured she took it with her into the house. Before I called you and got reminded of what a big loser I truly am, I searched under all the seats. I finally found it under the passenger seat –must have fell out of my bag at some point. Got my burrito. Feel gross and disappointed with myself that I ate it – it did taste good though. Now I get to have a salad for lunch – until I get distracted by something that looks better, but worse for me.

OMG – it is only 9:40PM. I have done a dozen sudoku puzzles, but the stupid time is not ticking away. I was right on Monday – it is going to be a long week. How come I am only ever right about really crappy things?

Las Vegas Highlights Day 5

Christmas Day in Vegas – couldn’t tell. Everyone was t the slots and drinking at 10 am in the morning.

Taking the bus to the far end of the Strip and wondering through all the hotels. Going through the Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. Walking around inside the Luxor Pyramid. Taking a tour of New York City.

Having Christmas dinner at the Outback Steakhouse and having a great view of the Mirage volcano as it erupted.

Taking a cab to the airport and scoring first class tickets for the trip home.

Arriving home at 3AM and crawling into bed.

Las Vegas Highlights Day 4

Discovering a bus that runs up and down the length of the strip instead of more walking.

Going to Downtown Las Vegas and being totally grossed out. Walked up and down and left.

Having the cashier at the Mirage go through the $1 chips to find some nice ones to take back for the kids.

Going up the Eiffel Tower and scaring myself silly. I don’t’ like heights, so why do I keep putting myself in these positions? Seeing the Bellagio fountains form the Eiffel Tower.

Scoring tickets to the Blue Man Group, but didn’t think to grab the ear plugs on the way in – won’t make that mistake again. Awesome show – would definitely see it again!

Las Vegas Highlights Day 3

Getting up and grabbing some fresh bagels and awesome hot chocolate before getting picked up in front of the hotel by a limo for our helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon.

Meeting a couple from England and discovering that he was born I the same small town that Mike’s family is from.

Getting the front seats of the helicopter because we had to fly to another spot to pick up more guests! Flying of the strip – getting a good look at Vegas, it is in an incredible flat valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Flying into the Grand Canyon and past the Hualapai Glass Walkway. Landed on a plateau and walked around the canyon for 30 min before having our picnic lunch and taking off again.

Seeing a flock a black sheep form the helicopter – we spotted them before our pilot!

Flying past the Stratosphere hotel as one of the rides went out over the edge of the hotel – I screamed in sympathy for them. I think I alarmed the pilot.

Having a nap in the afternoon, waking up to see all the lights on the Strip from our hotel room.

Walking down to the end of the Strip – again – to see the Bodies exhibit. I have been wanted to see it since it came to Toronto a few years ago. Fantastic! Getting to look at bodies dissected in all different ways. Seeing all the blood vessels of a body suspended in fluid. All the cigarettes that were placed in the receptacle after people saw the lungs of a smoker next to a healthy pair.

Las Vegas Highlights Day 2

Booking a bus tour to the Hoover Dam our first morning and finding out that we had enough time to have breakfast. Nice sit down meal – awesome omelets and Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy - Married With Children) and his family at the table beside us.

Looking at how different the landscape around Vegas is to what we are used to – very barren, rocky, little vegetation. Ducking under a rope to join a line to the elevators to avoid sitting through the 20 min documentary. Touring around the Dam – getting to go inside and see a generator that had been removed for maintenance for the first time in over 20 years. Walking across the Dam and into Arizona. Seeing the lime deposits on the banks which show how far down the water is. Less snow, less run-off. Global warming?

Finding the Siegfried and Roy’s secret Garden at the Mirage – the white lions and tigers were beautiful. The Dolphins were very active and the baby was cute.

Walking to the other end of the Strip to see Cirque Du Soliel’s KA at the MGM. We passed the Bellagio just as the fountains started. All timed to Christmas music – beautiful. Taking 5 minutes to walk/run through the MGM from the front door to the theatre – the place is huge! It is a lot farther away than it looks! Front row seats – the actors were jumping off the stage and landing right in front of us – awesome show! Walking home at midnight along the strip. Fantastic experience. I don’t think the place ever stops.

Discovering that the Mirage hotel is a mirage – no matter how long we walked the place never seemed to get any closer!

Las Vegas Highlights Day 1

The kids were spending Christmas with their father back in Canada. I didn’t want to be anywhere festive for the holidays – I was afraid I would miss them too much. It is my first Christmas morning without them. We decided to go to Vegas – out flight left a few hours after theirs:
While we were waiting for the kids flights to leave a friend called to say that he had found an elusive Wii for us.

Checking in for our flight and discovering cheap upgrades for First Class!

The cab ride to the Mirage – which was at the far end of the strip. It was awesome, we got to see all the other hotels and everything was all lit up just like the movies! It is so much nicer to see everything for ourselves.

Checking into the Mirage only to find that they were out of the rooms that we had booked and prepaid for, so we were upgraded and had an awesome room that overlooked the strip and the volcano outside!
