I'm a Loser Because

I needed a tent so of course I bought solar lights for our front walk. They were on sale so it's ok.

When I got home from work we set up all eight of them and stuck them into the front gardens. We went out to check on them when it got dark, but they weren't on - they didn't have enough time to build up a charge.

We waited until the next night - again, they weren't on, I guess it's not dark enough for them to come on yet.

Last night - still nothing so I grabbed one of them and dissected it on the kitchen counter. We had been pretty good about removing all the tags to activate the batteries, but completely forgot about those pesky little on/off switches.

How do you like your coffee?

I like my coffee crisp!

Chocolate bars are not fattening if they are purchased to support a good cause!

Task of the Day

Cirque Du Soliel tickets for the Corteo show.

Yes! Scored - awesome seats - first row. I rock!

Good Friends

I got swarmed by The Girl, her friend and her friend's parents.

They want to take The Girl to Florida for March Break.

Great! Oh, but wait - her father wants to take her to Australia on the March Break. You know, the trip that was supposed to be last summer, then this summer, then Christmas, which is now March Break.

So - say no to Florida, then have the other trip fall through, again, and miss out of Florida?

I'm am voting for Florida.

Thought of the Day

Fuck! We are not in Texas anymore.

We are supposed to head to Montreal to meet my sister and her family and spend the night. All is good. Except, I forgot that we are per owners again!

Can't leave the dog at the house overnight without suffering some serious repercussions when we got home.

Time to call in a favor.

Should be vs Reality

Typical night when the kids are scheduled to be at their dad's.

Should be...
Get home from work and look forward to a nice quiet relaxing night with Hubby.
Reality...
The Boy is picked up my his dad after hanging out at our house for the day.
Drive The Boy's friend home.
Grab Lebanese takeout.
Feed leftovers to drooling Jessie Dog.
Check out new race tracks on Mario Kart.
Deliver clothes to The Girl who is having a sleepover at a friends house.
Finally get to sit down at 8:30 PM.

Not much different than when we do have the kids.

Laptops Rule

The weather gods are still toying with me.

Dark clouds during afternoon tea walk.
My magic weather stick warded off the rain.

The storm caused a slight power blip in our building - lights went out and all our screens went dark for a moment - then the cursing started - the lament of the unsaved data.

Us laptop users giggled with delight - we are not popular at the moment.

Mmmm, New Log Book

I got a new Engineering Log book. My books are my best friends at work. They go everywhere with me. They help me get through meetings. They make me look good when I walk around when I have noting to do. Their batteries never die and leave me lost.

A good book can last me 6 months. The transition sucks though – for about two weeks I have to carry old book and new book until I get all the info transcribed and the old tasks taken care of.

I just pout a new list into the new book. There’s something about cutting up paper and taping in into my book that feels so good. Comforting, enjoyable, childlike. I don’t I am doing enough arts and crafts.

Kids - Summer

The Boy had had his first football practice after last night after having a month off.

He had survived the try outs and was dreading going to practice. He had the whole sick stomach thing going on. Didn’t help that we and a house full of friends and they were all swimming and having a major Wii session.

I told him I understood. It is exactly how I feel when I am sitting at work and I call home and I can hear the little bastards splashing in the pool, or worse, hubby gloating that he has just opened a new track on Mario kart. Being a grown up sucks.

Turns out that spending 3 hours a day in the pool is good cardio – who knew? – and The Boy kicked ass at practice last night. He left all mopey and came home grinning form ear to ear.

I’m back to work and mopey – being a grown up sucks.

I'm a Loser Because

I checked out the window at the back of my building before heading for my afternoon tea. Dark, cloudy and threatening to storm.

I chuckle at the weather gods and grab my umbrella

I walk through my building, through the tunnel and out the front door of the next building.

Blue sky.

The weather gods are mocking me as I carry my umbrella on a nice summer day, praying for rain so I don’t look like such a Loser.

Happiness is

Finding the bag of M&M’s that I didn’t finish at the movies last night!

Spider Shirts

S – Hey how’s it going?
D – Good – is that a new shirt?
S – Nope.
D – It looks silky – did a spider make it?
S – Silk comes from silk worms.
D – Spiders make silk too, their webs are made of it.
S – But they don’t make shirts from it.
D – How do you know?
S – I just do.

No this wasn’t two 5 year olds, but two engineers.

Happiness is

Having hubby find my blog and liking it.
He’s the best.

I'm a Loser Because

Work blocks Gmail and Picasa so, of course, it must also block Blogger. Not!
I can still get to my Blogger account – I’m back in business!

Kids

I have no idea how I stumbled across the site, but reading “Because I said So” is part of my daily routine. From there I was ‘introduced’ to King Julian and the rest of the cancer kids.

http://mom2my6pack.blogspot.com/

http://www.carepages.com/JuliansWorld

Sharing their journey makes me a better mom. I am more patient and understanding of my own kids and I try not to take any of it for granted, even the stupid stuff.

Since meeting Julian, I have seen Julian, John Eric, Cody (same age as The Boy) and Sara all earn their angel wings.

It’s not right that children have to go through this, or that their parents have to watch, helpless.

I hope little Coleman is going to be ok.

http://www.carepages.com/ColemanScott

I get to go home and give my kids an extra hug tonight and be thankful when they are bugging me for another snack or want hot chocolate or have the tv up a little too loud.

Good to be Home

The bestest thing about being home is having Tim’s. There is one on either side of work. The closest one is an express one and is walkable so you can walk in, grab your coffee and go. The other is a 1 min drive (technically walkable but I am terminally lazy) and I can get my weekly chili fix.

I am a bit out of practice:

Me: large chili to go
Her: It only comes in one size
Me: Oh
Her: pick it up over there
Her#2: you want any salt
Me: It’s to go
Her: To go?
Me: To go.

I guess Her#1 was too busy correctly me on the size so Her#2 had to dump the chili form the nice porcelain bowl into the cardboard tub. Not a good look for the food you are about to eat.

It tasted good though.

Eeeewwww

Cube mate is farting in his chair again. Does he think his chair is a fart suppressor? I can’ hear it, how come he can’t?

Task of the Day

Complete yesterday’s task – the pool cover, but I blame the weather yesterday, not my laziness.

Get new driver’s license and plates for the car – but couldn’t find the old plates this morning, so I will defer this task to one day next week.

I'm a Loser Because

After driving a company car for the last year I have my beloved Nitro back, but I couldn’t figure out how to turn on the rear wiper this morning.

Happiness is

Waking up and realizing it is Friday.
I managed to get up on the first snooze.
It was bright and sunny for the drive into work.
I beat the weather gods at their own game and went for coffee and my celebratory bagel at 8am instead of waiting until my predictable 9AM when the rain started!

I'm a Loser Because

I went to meet a friend n another building for coffee. I took my umbrella with me for the walk and I gloated at the weather gods that it couldn’t rain as long as I carried my umbrella.

I had to wait at her desk for a few minutes. I lost my powers by either setting my umbrella down on D’s desk or when I entered the building, because once D showed up, the heavens opened and it poured rain like a son of a gun, thunder and lightning too. After 10 min it let up and we walked over to Tim’s. I sulked back to my office in the light rain and got a few soakers along the way.

I slunk down at my desk with my wet feet and the sun came out.

Weather gods – 1
The Mom - 0

Happiness is

Being the first one in the office washroom after it has been cleaned.

I'm a Loser Because

After taking a month off, my brain is too soft for my daily Sudoku calendar.

Dream

The police showed up at my door.

Police: We are removing the dead body from your garage.
Me: How’d he die?
Police: Paper cut, lost his hand, bled to death.
Me: On what?
Police: Wall paper.
Me: I have been removing it from The Boy’s bedroom.
….
Mike Hi I’m home.
Me: Good – can you come in the garage and help me clean up the blood?

At no point did I wonder or worry who the dead body was.
And I woke up before seeing the blood.

Eeeewwww

Cube mate farted – out loud. Grabbed his stuff and left.

Eeeewwww

Walking to the kitchen to throw out the remains of my nectarine so it doesn’t ferment in my office because the garbage can only gets emptied ones a week!

I'm a Loser Because

Discovered that my newly charged phone has a cool main page, but I don’t know how I got it and when I lose it I may not be able to get back to it unless I burn up all my battery again.

Thought of the Day

I wear too much beige.

Task of the Day

Install the new pool cover so the old rotted one can go in the garbage tomorrow.

Happiness is…

Having hubby pack me a lunch while I am in the shower. Best sandwich ever.

Piss Me Off

Having the clean fork I set out for my lunch placed in the dishwasher.

I'm a Loser Because

Realizing that my cool new phone still needs to be charged and having it die on me during my drive home call to hubby.

Conversations at Work

C: Have you seen S-Man’s big Zucchini?

The Mom: Do I want to see his big Zucchini?

I must admit – it was a big zucchini.

Road Rage

Leaving work someone thought I should stop in the parking lot and let them pull out in front of me since I was only driving in a straight line! Drive on my ass all the way to the highway, pull out early on the ramp and drive up beside me so I can’t merge out of my disappearing lane.

Drive the limit so I have to pull out and pass you anyway – dumbass.
I hope you don’t work for IT and screw with my computer.

Task of the Day

The Boy’s birth certificate. I haven't been able to find it, or my separation agreement. I had them for the cruise because I had all the paperwork together for that. I tried looking through everything when we were cleaning up the rental house, and I couldn't find either document.
I need the birth certificate to get The Boy a new health card since his other one got lost. So I decided today was the day I would deal with it. I found the site on the web and I was actually able to call and do it over the phone – it is being expedited to the house. I'm done for the day. Yay me!

Thought of the Day

I miss the bathroom at work in Greenville. 95% of the time I had it to myself. Here there are a lot of women on my floor and the bathrooms upstairs are being renovated so we have to share. I don't like it. You know me and my bathroom issues.

Back to work

I didn’t sleep at all last night. I had no idea what to expect when I came in this morning. I came early and parked in Visitor parking – got to love Texas plates on the truck!

I was actually welcomed back with open arms. I found my new desk – one row over form the old one. It was nice to see everyone and chat and be able to walk around.

I sat down with new/old boss. It’s good to be back on the right side again. I did not enjoy my time on the Dark Side. I got my version of events out and got my new assignment and what is expected of me. Now I just have to be an extra good girl and prove that I am as capable as I should be.

First things first – Off to Tim’s for a coffee!

Day 3: Unpacking

Everything is finally out of the boxes and now I have to deal with it. My freshly cleaned out basement is full again. The main floor is done and live-able.

When I have the energy I will tackle the kid’s rooms which means carting everything down to the basement to make room for their big ass queen beds. Big beds, no toys – hopefully this will help keep their rooms a little cleaner.

I hate moving.

Puppy Dog comes home

We didn’t want to pick up the Jessie Dog until we were ready to stay at the house. Tonight was our first night so we got her just after supper. She was such a sad sight. Both ears were oozing with infection because dumb ass was too cheap to mention that she had an ear infection in case I may not have given him the money for a vet.

He lectured me on how to feed her (she was my dog for 12 years first) and was very arrogant about what good shape she was in.

Yes, she was freshly bathed, but she hadn’t been brushed in a year. The ear infections are going to take 6 weeks of several rounds of antibiotics to clear up and guess what – she is exactly the same weight as when I left. Asshole.

Day 2: Unpacking

They actually seem pissed off that I expected them to come back and unpack everything. The directions were very clear – unpack everything and set everything up. English may not be your first language but you come off pretty bilingual when you are announcing your breaks.

Every fucking box – do you want this one unpacked? YES, unpack EVERYTHING.

Then the best – We don’t set up trampolines. Oh, but yes you do. Last year after hubby and I didn’t speak for a day after getting the thing set up I asked if you would move it. You took it apart, put it in a box. Drove it to Texas. Unloaded it and SET IT UP. Fast forward 11 months later: You took it apart, put it into a box and but it in a truck and drove it back to Canada. You will set it up.

Ok, but a ‘special’ crew will come and do it later this week.

In the meantime I unpacked the kitchen. I took all the paper and began cramming it into an empty box, only to be scolded because I was creating more work for the lazy bastards because they would have to take the paper out of the box and put it in the giant ass bags.

I want my Texas crew back.

Day 1: Unpacking

OK – we got our stuff though customs without everything being searched. All you hear are horror stories, like the ones women tell you when you are pregnant for the first time.

Customs took less than 5 min – 2 of which were waiting for our number to be called.

The movers lugged all of our crap off the truck. We had good weather so they could unwrap the larger items in the driveway/garage before carrying it in.

It was a full day to just get the stuff unloaded.

My god, our house is small. There are boxes everywhere, I have no idea what I am going to do.

Clean Up

I had visions of coming home to a nice freshly painted, pristine house. Nope.
The house had been clean, but then the painters showed up. Even thought they had two whole fucking months, they waited until the last possible moment!

Instead of my pristine house – paint crap everywhere, drop cloths, contents of closest dumped everywhere. Stuff removed form the walls and stacked up in the hallways. Loose screws everywhere, not just the ones in my head.

The painters did do a great job and I really like the colors. We spent the weekend cleaning out all the crap we had left behind and getting the rooms ready for all the furniture. By Sunday night we finally had the clean, freshly painted house I was looking forward to seeing when we got home last week. Btu now I am too tired to care and I just want it all over.

Drive Home Day 13: Windsor, Ontario - HOME

The first thing I noticed about being back home – the drivers are psycho. I can remember getting to Texas and complaining that everybody did the speed limit, and more than a few were content to go a little slower. I guess I got used to it because every car on the highway was racing up my ass and when I didn’t get out of the way fast enough they would start weaving through 3 and 4 lanes to get past.

We got into Ottawa about 3pm and called The Boy. We had to drive past his dad’s house to get to ours. Since we didn’t want to see our dog until it was time to bring her home, we told him he would have to meet us on the corner.

We pulled into the neighborhood and there he was. It was so good to see him, big hugs all around.

When we turned onto our street, both kids bailed out in search of their friends.

We got home and it still looked like home. The painters were still there working, and we had a quick walk around the house. Everything seemed to be in good order.

It only took minutes to unbolt the security cover for the pool and the kids jumped in.

The kids Dad showed up to get them when he got off work and we took off to our favorite Lebanese restaurant before checking into our hotel.

We’re home.

Drive Home Day 12: Madison Wisconson - Windsor, Ontario

We were going to stop in Chicago, but we were really beginning to be excited about being home. We decided that Chicago was close enough to home that there would be a good chance of us coming back to see it.

It was actually exciting for us where we started seeing signs for the border crossing. We didn’t know what to expect since we would be crossing back into Canada at the end of along weekend, but we all thought it was fitting that we would be entering Canada on Canada Day.

We ended up going through the Tunnel, it was fun because at one point they have the border painted on the wall and we teased The Girl because for a moment we were in Canada and we had left her behind in the US.

We didn’t end up waiting for long at the border. We had to go into the immigration office to get a form stamped for returning the car, but since we had taken in to Texas with us, there was no problem bringing it back.

First stop was Tim Hortons. Coffee and bagels for us and a hot chocolate and donut for The Girl.
It’s nice to be home.

Drive Home Day 11: South Dakota - Madison, Wisconson

We decided to do a full day of driving. There wasn’t anything that really peaked our interest so we wanted to see how close we could get to home.

We liked Wisconsin, it was the first time things started to look like home. The trees and landscape, all the little rivers, it was all beginning to look familiar.

Drive Home Day 10: Somewhere, Wyoming – Somewhere, South Dakota

We decided that we would take some scenic highways and check out Deadwood, SD. We were such fans of the show. The town was nothing like we had expected it to be, it has turned into a little gambling mecca so it turned us off completely, we didn’t even get out of the car.

We continued on the back highways to Mount Rushmore and stopped at a nice gas station and made some sandwiches. Something in my system acted up and I had a horrible stop at a another gas station up the road. Thank god I will never be back there again. One poor woman walked in and only lasted about 3 sec before leaving, and yes, there was another stall.

We made it to Mount Rushmore without any more intestinal incidents. The Girl was thrilled since she had studied it in school and she told us all about it. It is much smaller than you think it is, but it is still impressive. Washington is a bit cross-eyed, but other than that it is very nice. There isn’t a whole lot to do there other than taking a picture of it so we didn’t stay long.

We got back out on the highway and headed for the Badlands. They are really impressive, to us anyway. We had to drag The Girl out of the car. After a few stops she finally started to explore. She started walking a long one of the paths to get out to a far point to get her picture taken. That turned into her running along the trails at the top of the ridge and me galloping behind her screaming ‘slow down!’. We actually had a ball and she perked right up after that.

Back onto the highway and the hunt for a hotel began. We pulled off at the first exit that had a hotel. There were a few listed, but only one that name that we recognized. It was full but the manager recommended a local hotel. We decided to check it out. It was amazing! Each room is different. Ours had a king and queen bed and a hot tub in the room. We were right beside the indoor pool which was the nicest pool I have ever been in.

Drive Home Day 9: Yellowstone - Somewhere in Wyoming

We got up and headed up to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We stopped by the mud volcanoes and walked around the trail. We freaked out when we came around a corner and there was a buffalo lying beside the walkway. Everyone was taking pictures of him and he seemed quite content to let them.

Next we got to the canyon falls. It was so beautiful. Not at all what you expect to see when you think of Yellowstone. We drove around to the North Entrance and saw a wolf and a lot more Elk and Buffalo. We left from the North Entrance and ended up back in Montana. We didn’t get back into Wyoming until the end of the day.

While we were in Montana we realized that we would be going by Little Big Horn so we stopped by for a quick look and the official pee visit. Unfortunately the pee visit happened in the worst gas station restroom I have ever been in. The odor wafted out of the bathrooms and maintained their power for a good 10 feet. I wasn’t able to identify the stench. It wasn’t the normal stale urine/ powerful disinfectant combination. It was something far worse and I suspect, not human.

Drive Home Day 8: Salt Lake City - Yellowstone

It was another nice drive through the mountains to Yellowstone. We left Utah and went through a small corner of Montana before entering Wyoming and Yellowstone.

Mike – We were hardly in Montana at all.
Me – I know, I said we would only be in it for about 15 minutes.
Mike – But I didn’t even pee in Montana so I can’t officially say I’ve been there.
Me – Horrified look.
Mike, very proudly – I know what you’re thinking – Yup I married that guy.
Me – Shudder

Our first stop was at some mud pots. There were a nice board walk loop to check out. Mike told us to pose for a picture and I got a turrets-like urge: I told The Girl ‘Let’s stick our bum out at him!’

I did, she didn’t.
I turned around.
There was the tour group that we had passed, who knew 20 people could walk so quietly on a board walk.
One lady was laughing her ass off at me.
I screamed ‘You weren’t supposed to catch up to us that fast’
The Girl rolled her eyes at me.
Mike, of course, captured it on film.

We drove around the park and looked at different formations. Mike tried to dare me to stick my hand in the water to see if it was really warm – I guess the steam didn’t convince him. We saw a couple of Elk and Buffalo and stopped and took some pictures.

We made our way to Old Faithful and got there 20 minutes before it was scheduled to erupt. There was lots of steam a few little spurts and then all of a sudden it exploded about 10 minutes late, but well worth the wait.

It was getting late and there were still a few things we wanted to see. We stopped by Lake Hotel and they actually had a room so we decided to stay for the night in the park and finish off everything else in the morning.

We checked into a 2nd floor room thing it would be best to be away from the main floor. There was no elevator but that was ok since we only had to go up one floor. We got up to the landing and looked for 206, but the rooms were all 100’s. The second floor turned out to be the 3rd floor.

I had the onset of a bad migraine so I crawled into bed with a cold facecloth and The Girl arranged the room. I thought it was weird that the media cabinet was on the side of the room instead of in front of the beds. The Girl asked if she could watch some TV and I said ok, as long as it was quiet.

Next thing I hear is a shriek of horror – ‘There’s no TV!’ Just then Mike got to the room after parking the car. He looked around and decided that we were not playing a game and he called the front desk – There are no TVs in Yellowstone. Ok, the park is absolutely beautiful but we are a techno geek family. We decided that we were going to have to get by with our three laptops for entertainment. We all piled into one of the beds and watched Dumb and Dumber. By then it was 11PM and we had survived a night without TV.

The funny part was that earlier in the day Mike had suggested that we adopt a non-electronics day every second week or once a month. It’s a nice idea but not for our family.

Drive Home Day 7: Las Vegas – Salt Lake City, Utah

When we headed down in the elevators this morning some girls started talked to The Girl about the M&M store and told her all about the one in New York City. Guess what is next on The Girl’s list?

The Boy had asked me to put a quarter in the slots for him so on the way out I stopped to stick a dollar in. Before I could throw away my money a maintenance man came over and said it was out of order and them told me I was going to be fined for having a kid in the casino. I had The Girl move 2 feet so she was on the tiled hallway and put my dollar in another slot machine. I won $5. I decided to keep the print out to show The Boy and I will give him the money.

We had an 8 hour drive but it went by really fast. It was all through the mountains and it was very scenic. Salt Lake city was a lot bigger than we thought it was gong to be. It seemed very industrial too. Quite night at the hotel and we will try to make it to Yellowstone tomorrow.

Drive Home Day 6: Flagstaff, Az - Las Vegas

We got a fairly early start. Even though it would only be a 4 hour drive, we were concerned about being stuck going over the Hoover Dam. Turns out we had nothing to worry about – traffic slowed down but we had no problem getting across. We stopped on the Nevada side and got out for a quick look. 10 min was more than enough in the heat. The Girl would have been happy to continue watching her movie and head straight to Vegas.

We got to out hotel – Planet Hollywood - no problem at all. We had splurged and reserved a suite with a panoramic view of the Strip. When we checked in we were informed that it would be a few hours until our room was ready. Even though it was a short drive we hadn’t slept well the past two nights and we were exhausted. We asked nicely and ended up with a free upgrade.

The room was on the 32nd floor with a view of Paris and the Bellagio fountain. As we were walking down the hall, The Girl was looking for our room number. All the doors were regular until we got to the end where our room was – huge double doors. The room didn’t have the panoramic view of the strip, but the room was very cool. It came with a pool table and a foos ball table. There was a poker table and other sitting tables as well as a lounge area. We had two bathrooms – the one in the lunge had a phone and the walls were velvet. The Girl was very impressed. We called The Boy – he wasn’t.

We grabbed a quick bite and then headed for the M&M Store – all four stories of it. We made it out with only 2 big bags of loot. The Girl was so excited. We carried on to The Bodies exhibit. The Girl did good. She liked the smaller displays of pieces, but didn’t’ care for the full bodies displays. She was ok to look at them while we walked by, but couldn’t look at them too close or for too long.

We got back to the room for a quick round of foos ball before heading down to Treasure Island to catch the Mystere show. It was awesome. The Girl was so excited to finally see a Cirque du Soleil show. We were in the fourth row so we had a great view of everything.

Drive Home Day 5: Grand Canyon

We got up early and grabbed breakfast at the hotel and headed out the Grand Canyon. There was hardly anyone on the road. We got into the park and stopped a few of the look outs. It was a spectacular as I remembered. The Girl was excited that we could see the lookout for the end of Bright Angel Trail. I had hiked the Bright Angel Trail twice almost 15 years ago.

We drove over to the Bright Angel Lodge and walked down the trail until we got to the rock tunnel. The Girl was all set to walk farther – it is so easy to walk down, but so much harder to walk back up.

We ended up walking out a lookout trail. The views were fantastic. I got a good view of the entire Bright Angel Trail – it is so much longer than I remember. I would love to go down it again but I don’t’ think I could get back up. Maybe we will try the Mules if we come again.

Dirve Home Day 4: Tucson - Flagstaff

It was 46 C when we started out at 10 am! Too hot. We drove up towards Flagstaff. We stopped to check out Montezuma’s Castle – a cliff dweller residence. It was only a short trail, so we didn’t melt too bad. It was still 40 C when we stopped to check it out.

Next we followed signs to Oak Creek Canyon. It took us off the highway on a scenic route. It was so amazing. We feel in love with Sedona and we really what to come back and check it out. The red rocks were beautiful and the shops and art galleries looked amazing.

We finally got into Flagstaff and found out hotel. We kicked back and went for a swim in the pool. It had cooled down and it felt great to walk outside and not roast. There was even a cool breeze.

Drive Home Day 3: El Paso, Tx - Tucson, Az

We drove from El Paso to Tucson Arizona this morning. We had clear skies and little traffic. We were talking to the Boy when we finally drove over the Texas state line. He let out a big whoop for everyone in the car to hear.

They Boy asked us to bring him back a tumble weed. We saw a bunch by the side of the road so we stopped and got the Girl to hold one up so we could take a picture of it for him.

Once we got into New Mexico we started seeing signs for The Thing – in 180 miles. The mystery of the desert. After three hours of signs we had to stop. It was $1 each to go and see – it was well worth it. It had kept us talking for 3 hours, we had a good laugh with 4 other people how were thinking the same thing.

We got into Tucson and went to the Saguaro National park and drove the 8 mile loop. It was awesome. The girl loved getting to sit up between the two front seats more than the actual cactus. We got there only 30 min before closing so we didn’t have a lot of time so we only did a ¼ mile hike path. That was more than enough in the heat. It hit 43 C while we were there.

Drive Home Day 2: San Antonio - El Paso

We finally got to sleep in – I hated to get out of bed.

We went downstairs for the breakfast buffet and we got a great table out my the river walk. It seemed to be a pretty quiet spot will not too much foot traffic. I can’t stand it when people are walking by and look at what you are eating, even though I do it myself.

There was a little Island right beside us that they were preparing for a wedding, we finished eating just as they were getting ready to start so we missed the ceremony.

We walked over to the Alamo – there was a huge line to go inside so we walked around the grounds. We went down by the river walk for one last walk around. On the way back to the car we passed the Alamo again and the line had gone down so we went in for a quick look around. There were a lot of people limed up to go through a small room, so we skipped that only had a quick look.

We felt like we were melting in the heat to we were glad to get into the air conditioned car.

TomTom said it would be 8 hours to get to El Paso. We took Interstate 10 the whole way. It was a really nice to see hills and mountains and watch the landscape change as we went.

I got stopped just outside of San Antonio, I was surprised that they bothered because even though I was going over 70 I was still less than 80. I told them that the car was Canadian so it is in Kilometers and I only got a warning. A few miles later the speed went up to 80 so they must have been getting people jumped the gun.

There wasn’t a whole lot of populated areas between San Antonia and El Paso. We stopped a Picnic Area for supper, we were hoping for bathrooms and running water. We were shocked to see that it was a wireless site! We had never seen that one before.

We got to watch a great lightening show as we came into El Paso. It was a huge city – much bigger than we imagined.

Drive Home Day 1: Dallas - San Antonio

We checked out of the hotel and meet the crew at the house. The truck was there too. As the guys started loading we went behind them and vacuumed the rooms as they emptied them

The Girl had forgotten a stuffed mouse ‘Nibbles’ at a friend’s house so she went over to get it. No one was home. She was so upset “I can see him, he’s right there in the window and I can’t get to him’.

The guys finished loading just after 2pm. We got all packed and headed over to say bye to the neighbors as The Girls friend drove by on their way home. We walked over and liberated Nibbles. We got all our good-byes said – I’m not good at them at all. Took some pictures of everyone and piled into the truck.

The traffic through Dallas was awful. We sat for 45 min trying to get to our exit to the next interstate. We got off the highway at one point and bypassed an interchange – we figured we saved ourselves almost an hour.

It was still late by the time we got into the hotel in San Antonio. Although we had planned to walk around and see the lights of the river walk, we never quite made it. I barely made it to the room.

Last day of packing

Today was a little easier – I finished up a few of the cabinets and did the floors in the bathrooms.

We had bought tickets to Stomp a few months ago and had actually picked our return date based on seeing the show. We grabbed The Girls friend again – this time for front row seats – slightly off center.

It was an amazing show – again is was so hard to pick a favorite part. There was so much humor in it as well. At one point we were laughing for 15 minutes straight.

We had hoped the girls would be tired and would nap on the way home. Nope – they were absolutely wired and treated us to a 20 minute fart show – blowing on their arms. I have no idea what The Girl’s friend is going to tell her parents about the evening. Maybe it's a good thing that we are moving.

Packing

Today went a lot better – I cleaned out the kitchen and bathrooms so I kept busy. It was nice to see everything sparkly clean- I am the farthest thing away from a neat freak but it was rewarding. I attacked the soap scum in the master bath shower and the rust stains in The Girl’s toilet as well as the icky gas stove cook top. I went though a bottle of CLR, a pack of SOS pads, a container of Comet, a bottle of Fantastic and most of the skin on my hands. I had red claws at the ends of my arms.

Movers

We got up early and put aside all the stuff we planned to take with us before the movers arrived. We were thrilled to see the same crew show up that unpacked us last year. They were fantastic.

The first day there wasn’t a whole lot for us to do. The Girl had a friend show up and hang out for awhile. After lunch I took them to a pottery place where they could paint there own pieces. Unfortunately they will not be ready before we leave so I had to arrange to have them shipped home. Just one more thing to worry about!

Last day of work

It was a bit weird going to work today. It is not really like leaving a job since everyone will be coming home eventually. Plus I will still be doing the same work when I get home.

The guys arranged for us to go out for lunch. That was nice. Of course my boss had nothing to do with it and he was too busy to come out with us. Nice send off. Not that I really wanted to see him anyway. It will be so nice to work for a human instead of a micro-managing robot. The guys staying behind are not exactly excited about spending more time here so it made it easier to leave.

After lunch I got everything packed up and loaded into the car. I was fine until I actually started driving home. I don’t even know what part of it bothers me the most about leaving. I want to go home, but I still hate being the first to leave. I just have to believe that it will all work out for the best.

Chinese Acrobats

It was our last weekend in Texas. A few months ago we had decided to see the Chinese Dragons – a Chinese Acrobats troupe. Since The Boy was gone we took one of The Girl’s friends. We had 2nd row center seats so the view was awesome.

The acrobats were fantastic and each act was better than the one before. None of us could pick a favorite act. The girls juggling tables were cool, so were the guys jumping through the hoops. The guy that staked all the chairs at the edge of the stage and climbed up to do handstands at the top was fantastic.
