Birthday Girl

It was The Girl's birthday today - the big one - double digits! I called her at her fathers - she said she didn't feel any different since it wouldn't be her actual birthday until 8PM - it used to be they wouldn't recognize their birthday until the day of the party!

When I was done talking to her (from work), Mike called her from the house and sang Happy Birthday to her. She got a kick out of that.

The kids flew back form Ottawa last night. It was so good to see them. When we got out to the truck we surprised The Girl with a cupcake and a candle and sang Happy Birthday to her in the parking garage at 10:30 PM. She was thrilled and grinned from ear to ear.

This morning Mike made her pancake and then met her at school for lunch. He dropped off the cupcakes for her class too - hopefully they turned out ok. When we placed the order, the woman actually fell asleep while writing down the info. The stored called yesterday wondering how they were going to fit 19 letters on 24 cupcakes. I am not sure what the prerequisites for working in the bakery are...

Mike did say they looked good and they even decorated the extra ones with flowers. Hopefully they pass The Girl's inspection. I am sad that I don't get to taste one, but when Mike was done at the school he picked up the Baskin Robins Ice Cream cake for tonight. Yum!

Up, Up and Away

Back to the airport. Check in went ok, the kids had their boarding passes already, but we had to get some to get through security. Their bags were already checked from the previous day. The flight boarded on time and we sat at the gate until the plane was gone.

We headed home and curled up on the couch. I watched the clock until they were supposed to land in Chicago. Their stop over came and went and no phone call form The Girl. It was disturbing, but he flights were all showing on time and I didn’t hear from the airline so they must have been ok.

Finally they made it to Ottawa – tired and happy. No bags though. Not a huge surprise. We all figured as much.

I have a horrible cold and I can finally sleep, but the house is so quiet without them. It’s not home when they are gone.

Planes, Planes, Planes

The kids were absolutely wired about flying back to Ottawa. We took them to breakfast and them headed to the airport. Their flight was at 1pm so it was a nice leisurely morning. Made it through check in and security no problem at all. Got to the gate and found out the flight as delayed 30 min. Not bad. It soon turned out to be 60 min.

They finally boarded and we took off. Yes, we are bad parents, but we were parked for 3 hours in a 2 hour spot. Luckily no ticket! We headed home, stopped and picked up some groceries and decided it would be a nice quiet afternoon snuggle dup on the couch.

We were loading the groceries into the car when the cell phone rang – The Girl. It was 2 hours into a 3.5 hour flight. Turns out they hadn’t left yet. There were mechanical problems with the pane and they just took everyone off! I started to panic, but the cool 9 year old told me not to worry, by the time we got back to the airport they would probably already be on another plane. They were fine. I was so proud of her.

We went home and The Girl called again – they had fixed the plane and they were boarding again. Finally! I started to relax and put on my sweats. We sat down and just got the Wii turned on and the phone rang again. Plane broke – flights cancelled. Nothing heading out for the rest of the day – come get your kids. Crap.

The kids were rebooked for Monday but had to connect through Chicago – oh well. Couldn’t be any worse than today.

Changed clothes – back to the airport. Back through security and found the kids at the UM office. They were exhausted but good. Back home – got to the house 11 hours after we had left for breakfast. Long day.

Return of the pox

It has been testing week at The Girl’s school and tomorrow is the big field trip to Austin. Today was the only free day so Mike met The Girl for lunch. She has had a little rash on her back – I figured it was the new clothes that didn’t get washed before she wore them. Mike had the school nurse look at them while he was there – Chicken Pox!! Not a huge big deal except she was deemed to be contagious which meant no field trip!

I asked Mike to take her to the doctor, just in case. This would be the third time with them! I know that you are only supposed to get them once, but the first time she was 6 months old and only had a few spots. A year later she got them again and had less than 20. So it may be possible that she hadn’t built up the immunity.

The doctor decided that based on her medical history it was some viral infection that was not contagious so she was healthy again and not contagious! Close call.

Get Out!

Sunday we had some really nice weather. If e were home I would have been out doing yard work at 8AM. Here I am just not inspired to pull weeds. I ran to Target to get a few things and when I got home everyone was either watching a TV or sitting in front of a computer. I had a mini freak out and kicked the kids out of the house to get some fresh air. I went out and pulled weeds for awhile as calmed down.

When I was ready I went back inside and we decided to talk the kids for a walk . We ended up following a path that we had been driving my for months that looked nice. We saw turtles and fish in the river and lots of ducks and squirrels. We ended up walking for 45 minutes. The kids thought we were trying to kill them, but it was nice.

After supper, I was ready to get into my Sunday night prepare-for the week rut when The boy remembered that I owed him a board game. I hesitated but decided to do it – I know our time with him is limited – he will turn into a brooding teenage pod-person at any moment so he went and picked a Lego game.

We all raced around the board trying to collect the pieces we needed for our models and while trying to steal key pieces from others. Mike gave up and his goal became stealing as many of the kids pieces as he could. The Boy won – no Hobo high fives today. It was a nice way to end the weekend.

Girls Day

Since The Boy was supposed to be at Camp, we had a Girls Day planned. We went and did most of it anyway, but after I returned all the food I had bought for the cancelled Scout Camp! Off to the salon – got pedicures and manicures. We went for the first time in January just before the cruise and I am now hooked. It is so relaxing.

After that The Girl got her hair cut. She got it cut short and it looks so cute. She is a little bit worried that it may be too short, but it looks great on her – she looks like a little teenager now.

Next it was off to her favorite shop – we had gotten some coupons in the mail and just had to use them. She got a few nice tops and them a few extras with her allowance money.

I was wiped after that so we headed home – Mike had taken The Boy to a movie on Friday so he had volunteered to take The Girl on Saturday, which left me free to go to The Boy’s repeat performance of Governing Alice. He was awesome, again. I thought the kids were better this time around – more relaxed, they weren’t being judged this time and they really seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Hobo High Fives

I found out Scout Camp got cancelled at the last minute – on hour before The Boy was supposed to leave. No biggie, but we were in charge of getting the food, which I had bought the day before.

Went home – sat on the couch and relaxed. It was great. The Girl guilt-ed me into playing a board game with her. I really didn’t want to, but agreed anyway. She picked Sponge Bob Life.

When The Boy saw what we were doing he wanted to join in as well. The Mike joined us. We all sat on the family room floor and played the game. The Boy, Girl and Mike could not hold onto their money to save their lives. It was hilarious. The Boy invented Hobo high-fives. The three of them high-fived each other every time they lost what little money they made. It was fun – we hadn’t played any board games since we arrived in Texas. The Boy wanted to play another but I couldn’t – he was so sad when I told him we would have to wait until the next day.

Did you forget about me?

Yesterday we had our first snowfall since we moved to Texas. I was woken up at 5:50 by the school district automated call to tell me that school had been delayed by 2 hours. I was supposed to be up at 6am, but I decided it was a good day to work from home, went and turned off The Boy's alarm and reset mine and went back to bed.

Mike is an early bird so he got up to make some coffee and read his newspaper. After an extra hour of sleep i heard a commotion - The Girl had woken up and came downstairs 'Did you forget about me?"

It was funny because she woke up, but took the time to get dressed, bushed her teeth and her hair before coming to investigate why no one woke her for school.

Since she had some time to kill, we dug out her snowpants and snow boots (We are Canadian!) and she went out and built some snowmen and snowangels before i dropped her off at school.

I spent the rest of the day actually working and got more done at home than the last week at the office. Soon The Boy was home - he came in carrying a scarf and hat - there was nothing left of the new snow, or the snowmen.

We might get more on Friday. I hope so, it would be nice to stay home again.
