The kids are flying back to Canada to spend the weekend with their father. While we are waiting at the gate, the kids usually use my ipod and save their batteries for the trip.
I had loaded some new games and The Girl was checking them out. She came across one and got the high score. She was showing be what she was going and purposely died so she could show be the score – that gave her the lowest score too.
The Boy took over thinking he was going to get his own high score – except he couldn’t beat her. So he did the next best thing – he got the lowest score. This turned into a 20 min competition to see which one of them could get the lowest score.
I’m going to miss them.

Talent Show
After weeks of practice we finally got to see the talent show.
Got home, inhaled a PBJ sandwich, did The Girls make up and rushed back to the school for her final check out - there was a problem with her cd. I figured at least I would be there early enough to score some decent seats.
Ha!
Psycho PTA moms had already been there and placed reserved signs on all the seats. I ended up in the third row. Plus - an amazon sat in front of me so whenever The Girl was on stage I had to scurry down the row and video tape form the aisle.
At least the show was awesome. It was done to the theme of ‘Night at the Museum” where the performers were grouped into exhibits and were introduced during the night watchmen’s shift changes.
It was very original and clever. It was written and produced by The Girl’s class – Grade 4.
The Girl had two shifts as a watchmen – I think she loved that part the most because she got to wear her brother’s suit jacket and tie. The jacket was too hot under the stage lights but she looked really cute in the tie.
She also sang ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. A group of girls had done the same song earlier and they added in a comedy bit about her missing her group of statues. Very cute and got a lot of laughs.
The Boy was dragged there, but he ended up really getting into it. He was bouncing in his seat and got the family next to him going as well. I thought they were doing to do the wave. The Mom next too him seemed really taken with him, all I kept thinking in a year or too he will see her as a MILF. I watch too much HBO TV.
After the show The Girl had The Boy piggy back her all around while she introduced him to her friends. Too cute.
After the show we surprised the kids with Baskin Robbins – luckily we got there before all the other families came up with the same idea. The kids had a great time but The Girl was dragging her bum this morning.

Horrible Mom Moment
On the way home from the Renaissance Festival, The Girl was playing with my ipod and all of a sudden the volume was deafening . We grabbed it form her and lectured her about the volume and what she was doing to her ears – not the first time either.
We checked the volume – sure enough it was at the max. More yelling.
Then we checked the movie she had been watching. Turns out it couldn’t be heard unless the volume was at max and we didn’t hear it until she has stopped watching and started playing a game.
I felt like crap.
Then I remembered how I wouldn’t let he do the hokey rides at the fair because we will be going to Six Flags in a few weeks – I didn’t want to wait in line. Then I said no to her ice cream because we were in line for 5 minutes and it hadn’t moved, and it was along line.
All of a sudden I felt like the worse parent ever.
The next day we took the kids to a huge flea market. The Girl scored big time. She got a lot of extras plus a few apologies for the previous day. I think she still loves me – but she is holding out for the ice cream, must make it there one night this week.

Renaissance Festival
Well – we finally made it the Festival.. We were so impressed when we went to the Halloween Haunted Houses, we decided that we would definitely come back for the medieval stuff.
We got a bit worried when the traffic was backed up on the interstate. Hubby was convinced we would get there and find the park full and was considering turning back. I called the park while we were sitting in line for the exit. They said this was normal (??) and no the park wasn’t full but with the nice weather they were expecting it to be a busy day.
It took almost 45 min to get off the interstate and go the 1 ½ miles to the park. When we got there it seemed like we got the last parking spot available. Yet, when we got to the ticket booths we got our tickets and got in no problem at all. The only thing that worried us was the t=line up for the women’s washroom, but other than that the ark didn’t feel crowded at all.
We stopped by the knife throwing act – it was pretty good. The kids were really impressed. Next the kids snuck through the crowds to get up to the fence and watch the jousting. They said it was ok – we didn’t see much of it, but we caught a few glimpses of the armor and they knights looked very impressive.
Next we caught a balancing act. They guy looked way too old for the stuff he was doing. He actually fell off the ladder on his first attempt. It certainly made for an exciting show after that. I really thought he was going to hurt himself.
We spent a while walking around and checking out the different booths. The swords were great – they even let the kids hold some of the big ones and explained that they were created for the movies – they would have never been used in history – just too heavy to wave around for any length of time. After picking one up, I agree.
The most amazing thing about the place were the costumes – not just the staff and the actors, but the other guests. Some of them were very elaborate and others made you want to bleach your eyeballs.
The boy spotted one guy walking around in amour that was covered in metal spikes. He asked him for a picture and I don’t know who was smiling more- The Boy or the armor guy. He seemed genuinely pleased that The Boy was impressed with his costume.
All in all it was a great day.

Dramapolooza
Tonight is the Drama Awards Ceremony. The Boy is presenting one of the awards so he broke out his suit. He looks very handsome.
Of course, it can’t be simple – the ceremony starts at 7PM and I have to be at another school for The Girl’s dance recital rehearsal at 6:30PM. I followed The Girl backstage to wait for her turn to go on – I didn’t have any time to spare. Good thing – while I was there I overheard the teacher and the organizer talking about one of other girls who was running late so they were going to wait for her – No!! I explained that we had to get to another school for 7PM. They were pretty good – they waiting as long as they could and the late kid arrived at the last minute – 20 min late!
The Girl got on, got off and we took off. I was rushing her and she was apologizing. It’s hard explaining to a kid that they didn’t do anything wrong and they are not in trouble while you are yelling at them.
We got there and got to the seats Hubby has saved for us (2nd row!!) just in time for the show to begin. The Boy instructed me to tape everything, but I only did bits here and there – I didn’t bring the monopod for the camera and it there was no way I was going to hold the camera through the entire thing.
The Boy presented his award – very professional. He is a natural on stage. He didn’t win any of the awards – they all went to senior kids who had been doing it for two and three years, this was his first. I was sad as a parent, but he seemed to be ok with it all.
The kids were really cute at the reception. The Girl was following The Boy everywhere and he was introducing her to everyone and piggy-backing her. I think he was using her to get attention, but that is ok, at least they were not fighting!
Hubby suggested we should do something to award the boy – he worked really hard all year and was very dedicated to his drama. We mentioned it to The Boy and he wants a video game. No big surprise there.

Mother’s Day
This was the most awesome Mother’s day ever.
The Girl woke me up at 6:30 am she was so excited to give me her present. We convinced her the first present would be to wait until 8AM to wake me.
8AM on the dot she was back I the room – she had made a little collection of her toys for me. A few trinkets to take to work and keep on my desk – I have a small collection there already.
The Boy had made me a nice card - “You’re a loser – But you are my loser” It’s incredibly sweet if you know the inside joke of ‘Loser’ with our family.
Next I got toast and tea. Once slice with jam and one slice with honey. I absolutely hate eating in bed, but the toast was yummy. The teas was good too – Hubby supervised. The last time she made it I insisted that she didn’t put any sugar in it. Hubby checked- she did, but she kept shaking the spoon until there were only 5 grains of sugar left! He snuck some in for me. My mom still gives me a hard time about having sugar in my tea. She says I’m too old for that now.
I was allowed to lounge in bed reading magazines for awhile, but soon I could here them conspiring out there. They all came running in to tell me that the garage door had been left open and the truck had been broken into. Hubby said I did a good acting job and we raced out to survey the ‘damage’ – a new firepit for the backyard! Very nice. We will defiantly put that to good use when we get back to Canada.

Bad Monday
First day back after 4 days off. Last Thursday I had an outpatient procedure. Left my back very sore. The kids have been great. They are loving helping me off the couch and out of the car.
We managed to get out to the movies on Saturday and Sunday. I was able to sit through them both without being in too much pain. The pills help. I feel ok until they wear off.
I didn’t sleep well last night- mostly the stress of coming into work and wondering how I would go. I was able to drive ok – it hurt getting I and out of the car, but I didn’t take any pain pills until I got to work. I was worried that they would make me drowsy for the drive. I was drowsy anyway because of the lack of sleep. Now that I am here and the pills have kicked in I don’t’ feel too bad – except I am stuck her ear work. All I want to do is go home and crawl back into bed.
Mike started a new job today – he is in training until 5pm. I miss being able to talk to him whenever I want. I got a text from him though, so he still loves me!

Natural Bridge Caverns
We didn’t tell the kids so that we had an out in case we didn’t feel up to it – but we decided that since we were there we might as well go.
I am quite sure that I did the caverns 18 years ago, but nothing seemed familiar when we were inside the caves. It was breathtaking – huge caverns with magnificent formations.
Even the kids seemed to enjoy it. Hubby and both kids were going nuts with the cameras snapping pictures. Some even turned out really well.
It was defiantly worth the trip.

Sea World part 3
The penguin encounter was very interesting – once you got over the smell. You got used to it after awhile. It was a lot of standing around and the penguin looked like he really didn’t want to be there. He kept trying to jump into buddy’s lap and snuggle. It was cute.
We all got to pet him- again not was you would expect. The penguins have a very thick layer of feathers to keep them warm and keep the water out, but the individual feathers are very soft.
We got to go inside the habitat and have a look – we couldn’t walk around though because it was too slippery. A few penguins came over and checked us out.
It was a cool way to end the day.

Sea World part 2
So – I forgot that Beluga Whales are arctic animals. Means they are used to very cold water. Crap – didn’t thin that one through.
I had initially tried to convince The Girl that I didn’t need to go into the water – I could be an observer. Nope. She wouldn’t go for that. I should have tried harder. The things we do for our kids.
First things was getting into our wet suits. They put all the women in a locker room and we had to shout out our dress sizes to get our wet suits. Nice. But – turns out I had the smallest size – I tied with some teenager for a size 10! Yes. Nothing like a trip to the real world to make you realize that Hollywood is not representative of the average woman’s body.
Whoops – turns out that wet suits don’t’ come in vanity sizing and I couldn’t get the stupid thing on. I felt ridiculous trying to pull it up and The Girl was helping me but I think she was starting to get embarrassed by her whale of a mother. Turns out that they had given me an 8 by accident. Ok –not too bad. By the time I finally got dressed I was exhausted and actually looking forward to getting in the cold water.
Then I stepped in it – I got over that feeling really quite. Luckily we didn’t have to be completely submerged and we were just up to our waists on a ledge. I am a complete wuss when it comes to getting wet.
The Beluga was really cool. It was very squishy because of all the insulation they have. It was very different form the dolphins I have interacted with before. The bulge on their head is actually filled with oil and it is used for sonar. Cool.
The Beluga really took a liking to The Girl and hung out with her for most of the visit – that was good. Of course they finished off our experience by having all the Belugas come by and splash us – nice. Very memorable.

Sea World for the Girl Part 1
Since The Girl had the big birthday this year – double digits, and we were not able to throw her a big party with her friends back home, she really wanted to swim with the Beluga Whales at Sea World.
Of course, like the over indulgent parents we are – we arranged for it, and as a surprise we also booked a back ground tour of the penguin habitat.
The kids were both really excited about the Belugas. We got checked in and had some time to kill before our swim so we checked out a few of the shows. We also decided to go and feed the birds – but we were the first group to go in for the day. The birds looked like they were going to eat us. I was trying to our the nectar into another cup so each kid could hold one and I got swarmed. I love animals, but only from a distance. I am never too fond of sharing my personal space with them.
The Boy loved it and clicked away with his camera while making fun of the faces I was making. The Girl freaked initially, but eventually held one of the cups and a few of the birds sat on her arms.
Hubby took the kids on one of the rides – which doesn’t look like much until you get to the top. It is a roller coaster that just goes up and down some hills – but you really pop off your seat at the tops of the hills. I didn’t mind being the one to hold the bags for this one. I had gotten sucked into it last time! Ha Ha!

Going Home
Found out recently that we have been cleared to return to Canada.
We greeted this with mixed feelings. There was a possibility that we could have stayed for another 6 months to a year. Which would have meant
- the kids friends coming down for visits over the summer
- trip out to the Gulf Coast
- Cruise out of Galveston
- another year of school down here for The Girl to work on her reading without dealing with another language
- possibility of The Boy returning to Canada early
- the kids spending most of the summer in Canada without us
It took a few days to decide that going home now would be a good thing. As much as I would have like to stay to the bitter end of the program, I have finished my work months ago and now i spend a lot of time waiting on other people.
Going home early means:
- getting to spend the summer by our pool
- driving home in nice weather and taking the long way home to look at some cool stuff
- getting to see the kids on a regular basis over the summer
- the kids being back with their friends
- getting our dog back
- hubby getting back to his career instead of working at just a job
- seeing our friends again
- working in a facility where I can walk around
- TIM HORTONS - Canadians will understand this.
We will miss the opportunities that we had to travel and do things with the kids while we were her. But, we really made an effort to get out and see as much as we could and tried to take advantage of every long weekend. We will leave with lots of fun memories and look forward to more adventures.

To Be An Only Child
The boy is off at Scout Camp. The Girls loves it when she is an only child. We took off to Six Flags for the day and she got to pick all the rides.
Traditionally the kids go on this Sombrero ride first. Since The Boy wasn’t there I agreed to go wither her. I got quite a fright when I realized that is wasn’t the little kiddie ride I had assumed it was.
Next on to the snake ride. The Girl was thrilled that she got to sit by herself instead of sharing with her brother or me. She whooped and hollered the whole was down. Me and Hubby did to – at her to hold on – she had both arms up in the air and we were scared to death that she was going to fly out of the seat.
We did all our regular rides and we also tried some new ones. We finally convinced The Girl to go on the rocket – it’s like the Pirate Ship, but it goes upside down. She did it and said she would never do it again – I can live with that. I think I am getting to old for this crap.
We found a roller coaster that The girl was tall enough for – she wasn’t’ too sure since it had a loop in it. You go through the loop and then you go backwards through it again. She kept her eyes closed the whole way, but when it was over, she was grinning from ear to ear – she was so proud of herself – it was defiantly worth the concussion I got on the thing.
Next was another old fashion wooden coaster that you had to go through a tunnel to get to. It was much tamer, but a rough ride just the same. It scrambled what little brain I had left.
Looks like we can get in one more trip before we head back. That will be the last one where the kids get to actually spend money. They have been really good about not asking for stuff each time we go.
I wonder if I could get away with telling them we will go once more and then running out of time – probably not.

Looks like we can get in one more trip before we head back. That will be the last one where the kids get to actually spend money. They have been really good about not asking for stuff each time we go.
I wonder if I could get away with telling them we will go once more and then running out of time – probably not.
Easter
Wow – it is much harder to set up for Easter and lay the egg trails when the kids are getting old enough to be up later that you are. Come Friday night I am so tired I am usually falling asleep in my supper. The kids on the other hand are wired because they get to stay up late! Not a good combination for being stealthy.
I ended up napping on the couch all evening and when hubby woke me for bed I got up and brought all the loot out and laid the egg trails. The Girl was out and I was really quiet and just started The Boy’s trail outside of his door.
I woke up to eggs dropping in a plastic bucket at a very early hour – but The girl was good – she checked out her stuff but let us sleep until a decent hour. She tried to wake The Boy, but he figured he his stuff would still be there when he woke up so he wouldn’t get out of bed.
The Boy got his Rock Band and was really happy. It’s nice that he is taking an interest in music – so far I haven’t seen any was to kill anyone or blow anything up in Rock Band. We just have to listen to the drumming. Hubby is looking into getting sound suppressing covers for it.
The Girl got a bunch of craft stuff so I have new art work to take to the office! Yeah!
We had an awesome ham that we will be eating for the next month, but the scalloped potatoes didn’t turn out too well. I didn’t have the cream I normally used and the milk didn’t make the sauce think enough. Oh well – less that I forced myself to eat!
