Drive Home Day 10: Somewhere, Wyoming – Somewhere, South Dakota

We decided that we would take some scenic highways and check out Deadwood, SD. We were such fans of the show. The town was nothing like we had expected it to be, it has turned into a little gambling mecca so it turned us off completely, we didn’t even get out of the car.

We continued on the back highways to Mount Rushmore and stopped at a nice gas station and made some sandwiches. Something in my system acted up and I had a horrible stop at a another gas station up the road. Thank god I will never be back there again. One poor woman walked in and only lasted about 3 sec before leaving, and yes, there was another stall.

We made it to Mount Rushmore without any more intestinal incidents. The Girl was thrilled since she had studied it in school and she told us all about it. It is much smaller than you think it is, but it is still impressive. Washington is a bit cross-eyed, but other than that it is very nice. There isn’t a whole lot to do there other than taking a picture of it so we didn’t stay long.

We got back out on the highway and headed for the Badlands. They are really impressive, to us anyway. We had to drag The Girl out of the car. After a few stops she finally started to explore. She started walking a long one of the paths to get out to a far point to get her picture taken. That turned into her running along the trails at the top of the ridge and me galloping behind her screaming ‘slow down!’. We actually had a ball and she perked right up after that.

Back onto the highway and the hunt for a hotel began. We pulled off at the first exit that had a hotel. There were a few listed, but only one that name that we recognized. It was full but the manager recommended a local hotel. We decided to check it out. It was amazing! Each room is different. Ours had a king and queen bed and a hot tub in the room. We were right beside the indoor pool which was the nicest pool I have ever been in.
